BAGAN…SEA OF PAGODA
Once I visited “Bagan“ the ancient Asian city of Myanmar, I feel like I went back via a time machine.
Dating back over 1000 years ago, their historical architecture and traditional culture still remain intact for all to see. The locals still live a simple life, untouched by modern technology and the day to day stresses of a modern city. The city well deserves its name as “Sea of Pagoda” with numerous Pagodas & ancient Temples spread around this expansive city, occupying space with today’s rural farmers. Even though almost half of the Pogadas were destroyed by invaders, weather and earthquakes, more than thousand Pagodas remains intact in the ancient city of Bagan as places of worship for the peoples love and dedication to Buddha, Bagan truly is the spiritual heart of the great Myanmar kingdom.
I have a fond first impression of Bagan as I was welcomed with a warm big smile from Agogy (uncle) my Burmese taxi driver who carried me in his horse and buggy, transporting me from the new city to Old Bagan.
Unlike the fast paced lifestyle of big cities where everyone is rushing to go somewhere or do something “Time” is a luxury the Bagan locals seem to have in abundance. Even my horse took his time, ignoring his masters whip and orders to hurry up, slowly trotting along these old roads allowing me to take in the overwhelming surrounding as I made my way to my hotel
I begin my adventure at “Ananda Pagoda”, an important historical architecture in the early century of the great Burmese kingdom. Passing the great arch gate to the temple, I walk through series of inner vaulted corridors which are designed to lead us to the large shrine for our worship. I walk slowly through these dark secret passages, taking my time to indulge in the moment of silence and dim lighting and the feelings it impress upon me. There are only candle lit lights and from outside small amounts of light penetrate through the light wells on the very high wall. The light falls directly to the face of Buddha images which are located inside the corridor niches, purposely built to change throughout the day, this represents the skillful, thoughtful work of that Burmese architects of that period.
The Centre of the Pagoda displays a very large elegant statue of Buddha in standing pose.
The next Pagoda I visited was the “Thatbyinnyn Pagoda”, the tallest Pagoda in Bagan and then on to “GuByaukNge (Myinkaba) temple“ which is located in the middle of a large field. I climbed up the templeled by the smallest of tour guides – a Myanmar boy who brings his smiles to all visitors with his talkative voice in English & Thai.
After this there was many more of Pagodas to visit, HtiloMinto Temple, Thambula Temple and many smaller ones as I made my way to the last temple to visit for the day.
The final highlight of the day for everyone, tourist and locals alike is the “Shwesandaw pagoda”. We all climbed up to the view point waiting for the sun to finally set while offering us 360 degree views of this magnificent city and its many Pagodas. When the orange sun hits the sandy fields below it showers the city in a golden light, surrounding us with its warm glow. It is today as it was a thousand years ago, to be enjoyed by all.
พุกาม... ดินแดนแห่งทะเลเจดีย์ 4,000 องค์
ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างล้วนเปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามกาลเวลา แต่มีสถานที่แห่งหนึ่งที่กาลเวลาเสมือนว่าหยุดนิ่งไว้ที่แห่งนี้ เมื่อหลายร้อยปีที่ผ่านมา “พุกาม” เมืองที่มีสมญานามว่า “ดินแดนแห่งทะเลเจดีย์ 4,000 องค์” แห่งอาณาจักรพม่า ยังคงสภาพเหมือนในอดีต ด้วยสถูปเจดีย์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่สวยงาม กระจายตัวตั้งอยู่อย่างสง่าท่ามกลางทุ่งหญ้า แม้ว่าสภาพโบราณสถานจะมีการเสื่อมคลายพุพังไปบ้างตามกาลเวลา แต่ความสง่างามของโบราณสถานต่างๆ และบรรยากาศเก่าๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวิถีชีวิตของชาวพม่า ความเป็นอยู่ที่เรียบง่ายสามัญ ยังคงสภาพใกล้เคียงในอดีตอย่างมีมนต์ขลัง
ก้าวแรกสู่พุกามเราได้รับการต้อนรับด้วยรอยยิ้มและอัธยาศัยอันดีงามของคุณลุง (อาโกจี้) ชาวพม่าผู้ยังคงใช้รถม้าในการบรรทุกสัมภาระและรับส่งผู้โดยสาร รถม้าพาเราผ่านกำแพงเก่าเพื่อเข้าสู่เมืองพุกามโบราณ (Old Bagan) รถม้าเคลื่อนตัวอย่างอ้อยอิ่ง “เวลา” คือสิ่งที่ชาวพุกามยังคงใช้ได้อย่างฟุ่มเฟือยในเมืองเงียบสงบแห่งนี้ ช่างต่างกับเมืองใหญ่ที่เร่งรีบวุ่นวาย ชาวพุกามรอได้เสมอ และรอด้วยรอยยิ้ม
เราเริ่มต้นการผจญภัยใน “ทะเลเจดีย์” ที่อนันดาวิหาร (Ananda Pagoda) วิหารอันเก่าแก่โบราณแห่งประวัติศาสตร์ของพม่า เราเดินลอดซุ้มประตูอิฐโค้งไปตามทางเดินอุโมงค์ภายในวิหารอย่างช้าๆ ซึมซับช่วงเวลาความงามในความเงียบสงัดที่มีเพียงแสงเทียนและกลิ่นธูปจากการนมัสการตามจุดต่างๆ บวกกับแสงอาทิตย์รำไรที่ลอดผ่านซุ้มช่องแสงด้านบนกำแพง ซึ่งยอดที่ช่างชาวพม่าได้บรรจงประดิษฐ์เจาะให้เป็นจังหวะให้แสงนั้นส่องพระพักตร์พระพุทธรูปขนาดย่อมที่ซ่อนอยู่ตามซอกซุ้มผนัง และแสงนี้จะเปลี่ยนมุมส่องพระพักตร์ของพระพุทธรูปไปตามช่วงเวลาของวัน ศูนย์กลางของทางเดินรอบวิหารแห่งนี้คือ พระพุทธรูปแกะสลักขนาดมหึมาที่ยืนเป็นสง่ากลางวิหาร
ถัดมาคือเจดีย์ สัพพัญญู (Thatbyinnyn Pagoda) เจดีย์ที่สูงที่สุดในพุกาม ตั้งเป็นสง่ากลางทุ่งนาที่ห่างไกล เราขึ้นชมสถาปัตยกรรมที่สวยงามแห่งนี้ โดยไกด์พม่าตัวน้อยผู้วิ่งนำเราขึ้นลงชมวิหาร และยิ้มแย้มพูดคุยตลอดเวลาด้วยภาษาอังกฤษปนพม่าอย่างน่ารักฉะฉาน เราหยุดชมวิวที่จุดชมวิวชั้นบน ก่อนบอกลาทูตตัวน้อยแล้วมุ่งหน้าเดินทางไปเยี่ยมชมเจดีย์อื่นๆ ที่กระจัดกระจายอยู่รอบเมือง
เจดีย์ ชเวซันดอ (Shewesandaw Pagoda) คือโบราณสถานที่หมายสุดท้าย ที่เราและชาวพุกามทยอยกันไปรวมตัวกันในยามเย็น ทุกคนจะปีนขึ้นไปบนยอดวิหารสูงเพื่อชมพระอาทิตย์ตกดินพร้อมกัน เมื่อพระอาทิตย์เริ่มโรยตัวมาสัมผัสพื้นดินเมืองพุกาม ซึ่งไม่มีตึกสูงใดๆ มาบดบังทัศนีย์ภาพอันสวยงามนี้ เบื้องหน้าของเราจึงเห็นพระอาทิตย์ดวงกลมโตสาดแสงสีส้มดุจแสงทอง อาบไปทั่วเมืองพุกาม
เรานิ่งสงบตะลึงกับภาพทะเลเจดีย์พันองค์สีทอง ที่เรียงรายไปจนสุดขอบฟ้านี่ หรือคือภาพที่ชาวพม่าโบราณตั้งใจเสกสร้างให้กับชาวพุกามเมื่อพันปีก่อน วันนี้ตอนนี้ภาพนี้ได้ส่งต่อมายังลูกหลาน จากกาลเวลาที่ได้หยุดไว้แล้วที่นี่ และเราหวังว่าพุกามจะเก็บรักษาความงดงามของโบราณสถานประวัติศาสตร์แห่งนี้ตลอดไป
