A Place You Should Visit One Day!

In the past, mentioning of a cemetery could probably make you feel scary. Today the cemetery is not ‘a house for the dead’ anymore as it has become an unlikely tourist attraction.

Cemeteries in major cities have become one of traveling destinations for tourists, especially those who like sculptures because they are filled with beautiful works of art such as Highgate Cemetery; one of London’s great Victorian cemeteries opened in the early 19th century. The most intriguing area is The Circle of Lebanon, a sunken avenue of funerary vaults set into a circular shape, Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise; a well-known cemetery in Paris for tourists who like art and culture and Cementerio de la Recoleta; a cemetery located in Buenos Aires, Argentina where you can hunt down Evita’s grave, including many other famous people in the history.

As nowadays urban land prices are soaring, it is inevitable for some places to revise their goals. For this reason, many cemeteries have changed from abandoned lands to have beautiful and attractive landscapes. Some of them have changed to be public parks as well.

We have seen many beautiful cemeteries in foreign countries. We hope that one day we can visit beautiful ones (not too scary) in Thailand.

ในอดีตหากเอ่ยถึงสุสาน ภาพความน่ากลัว จะปรากฏขึ้นทันที แต่ในยุคที่คนเป็นกับคนตายอยู่ร่วมกันได้ในพื้นที่ที่เริ่มจำกัดขึ้น สุสานหลายแห่งก็ไม่ได้ทำหน้าที่เป็นแค่ ‘บ้านของคนตาย’ อีกต่อไป แต่กลายเป็นสถานที่หย่อนใจที่คนเป็นเริ่มคุ้นชิน

สำหรับนักท่องเที่ยวที่ชื่นชอบงานประติมากรรมแล้ว สุสานใจกลางเมืองสำคัญๆ หลายแห่งเป็นหนึ่งในเป้าหมายของการเดินทางไปเยือน เพราะสุสานเหล่านั้นมักจะเต็มไปด้วยงานประติมากรรมที่แสนวิจิตร อย่าง Highgate Cemetery ในกรุงลอนดอน ที่เปิดขึ้นในช่วงศตวรรษที่ 19 ก็เต็มไปด้วยงานสถาปัตยกรรมในยุควิคตอเรียนรวมถึงหลุมศพวงกลมขนาดใหญ่ที่กลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของที่นี่อย่าง Circle of Labanon ส่วนสุสานอีกแห่งที่นักท่องเที่ยวผู้ชื่นชอบศิลปวัฒนธรรมปรารถนาจะไปเยือน ก็คือ Cimetiere du Pere-Lachaise ในกรุงปารีสที่งดงามไม่แพ้กัน

ในยุคที่ที่ดินในเมืองมีราคาสูงลิ่ว การปรับเปลี่ยนเป้าประสงค์ของบางสถานที่ ก็ดูจะเป็นเรื่องจำเป็นไม่ใช่น้อย เหตุนี้เองสุสานหลายแห่งจึงไม่ได้เป็นเพียงที่รกร้างอย่างในอดีต แต่ถูกปรับภูมิทัศน์ให้ดูงามตาน่าเข้าไปเยือน หลายแห่งถูกปรับเป็นสวนสาธารณะ รวมถึงเป็นปอดของคนเมืองนอกเหนือจากเป็นแหล่งท่องเที่ยวแนะนำเนื่องจากสุสานหลายแห่งเป็นบ้านหลังสุดท้ายของบุคคลสำคัญ อย่างที่ Cementerio de la Recoleta ในกรุงบัวโนสไปเรส ประเทศอาเจนติน่าก็มีหลุมฝังศพที่งดงามมากของ Eva Peroni หรือ Evita

ได้เห็นสุสานงดงามในต่างแดนแบบนี้ บางทีก็แอบฝันเหมือนกันว่า เมืองไทยเราจะมีสุสาน สวยๆ ที่ไม่หลอนมากเกินไป จะได้กล้าไปเยือน
